Don't Forget Your GPS When You Go Skiing Or Hiking!

By Mary Anne Miller

For years I would not hike alone because I know I don't have an excellent direction sense, but now with a GPS in my pocket I'll go anywhere that I like and be totally assured that I can find my way home without effort. As a result I take my GPS with me when I go on camping trips or simply out for a long walk on trails near my home in Vermont.

I bought the Garmin nuvi 1490lmt GPS as it provides lifetime traffic and map updates, so now I never have to pay another cent but my maps are always current and I haven't got to stress about the information on my GPS being superseded. The updates cover North America, Canada and Puerto Rico. In any of those countries, I can always find my way home.

Cross country skiing is an an incredibly popular hobby in Vermont thanks to the flat snowy landscape in the winter months. The weather can change fast and without warning and visibility can be reduced so it is impossible to see landmarks to find your true direction. With the Garmin GPS I can find my location by tapping the screen and I am given true latitude and longitude positions or the most highly effective road to my final destination.

The GPS is an almost standard fixture in most cars and everybody uses it to find their way to a destination, but the GPS device is virtually more handy out of the car than it is in it! For outdoor enthusiasts the GPS is a security device and has many extras which make it a really helpful travel companion.

There is a currency converter, a world clock with all of the world timezones, a jpeg picture spectator, there is also a global measure converter and a calculator. The modern GPS is light and compact and very often includes a carrying case. It is no trouble to pack to take with you wherever your destination and is highly helpful.
